Currently we have four teams that are working to reach people in our local community for Jesus (White Oak, Good Hope, KIDZ CHALLENGE, Youth Ministry). Now we are introducing a fifth team to reach across the globe and touch the people of India. This group will meet monthly in conjunction with the World and Local Missions Prayer Meeting (last Wednesday of each month). Is God calling you to be a part of this team? Speak to Jeff or Sue Pankratz, or call the church office at 301-384-6996.

Women’s Spring Retreat
"Pass the Salt" is the theme of our District Retreat in Ocean City, MD, on April 23-24, where we'll be encouraged to be salt and light in a world that needs both. Our First Alliance extended stay through April 25 will include SALT: we’ll be coached to write out the story of our spiritual journey so we can share it with our friends; LIGHT: we’ll look at a variety of ways to share our faith and figure out options that are a good fit for us; and SPA NITE: since beautiful are the feet that bring good news (Is. 52:7), we’ll give ourselves pedicures while we enjoy games and a movie. Retreat brochures are available at the guest services counter. Registration deadline is March 14. Contact Rita Schuh, 301-589-8377, with questions.

Special Prayer Meeting – NEW!

PRAY FOR HAITI
The Alliance Responds to Haitian Catastrophe
Update
On January 20, 2010, at 6:03 a.m. (EST) a 6.1-magnitude earthquake hit 35 miles WSW of Port-au-Prince. News reports say many people have been living outside since the original earthquake on January 12 and are noticeably shaken.
In partnership with sister organizations already on the ground, CAMA will continue to provide immediate assistance—including clean water, emergency shelter, medical aid, and other necessities—as well as long-term help in rebuilding efforts, integrating Jesus’ message of redemption with practical acts of compassion. A compassionate response during a disaster tangibly expresses Christ’s love and opens doors for other ministries, says Phil Skellie, CAMA’s president.
_____________________________________
Already, 30 survivors have given their lives to Jesus during a worship service led by Pastor Frenel Cevedieu, a C&MA official worker in Carrefour, Port-au-Prince. With the little he has, he has been feeding 300 people.
_____________________________________
For more than 120 years, The Alliance has been meeting the physical and spiritual needs of countless men, women, and children around the world. In the weeks and months ahead, the people of Haiti will be at the center of Alliance relief and recovery efforts through CAMA.
Make a Difference
Join us in linking the Word and deed by allowing CAMA to be your hands to our Haitian brothers and sisters. Together, we can help support those whose lives have been disrupted by this earth shattering disaster.
If you didn’t get a chance to make a donation, go to the church website (www.1stalliancechurch.org), click on the donate button and indicate your gift for Haitian relief. So far, our church has collected $3,357.00. Alliance Churches across the nation have collected $170,000 in just this first week alone.
Continue to Pray
• For God’s grace and comfort to be very real and present to the people of Haiti.
• For safety, strength, and wisdom for those responding to this immense need.
• For the logistical challenges of getting aid into the hands of the most vulnerable people at this critical time.
• That God will redeem this tragedy by drawing many people to Himself.

New Sermon Series
On January 17 we we started a new series of studies in the sanctuary that coordinates with our adult discipleship ministry. The series is called “Connecting in Christ Together” focusing on the importance of Christian fellowship. Understanding and experiencing biblical community cannot be overstated. Everyone who is in Christ needs to be connected to others who are in Christ. It is not just good for us, it is required by Jesus.
|
Adult Discipleship Training – Purchase Books on Sunday
Classes/groups for both level 1 and level 2 started January 17. Books are available for purchase on Sunday at the guest services counter. Level 1 covers: Assurance of salvation, God’s love and forgiveness, the Holy Spirit, and Disciplines for growth. Level 2 focuses on biblical community and the connectedness that we have in Christ. Need help finding or starting a group, indicate your interest on the Communication Card.

New Year – New Habit
Are you spending time in God’s Word on a regular basis? The start of a new year is always a good time to start ain the church lobby you will find a helpful reading guide. If you don’t have a Bible of your own, we would be glad to provide you with one. All you have to do is ask.

Vision Statement
A vision statement is a word picture of a preferred future. It incorporates our sense of mission and what we believe that God wants to accomplish through us. The short statement below is simple enough to memorize. A more detailed description is also available. If you have not received a copy, stop by the ushers table at the back of the sanctuary on Sunday.
Vision Statement of
First Alliance Church:
We will change our world
by helping people
know God, love life and serve others.

First Alliance Youth
Youth Yard Sale
In the month of April the teens are planning on doing a yard sale. This yard sale is to help raise money for the teens to go to the LIFE conference this summer. If there is anything that you have around your house that you would like to donate to be sold, please start to set it aside now. I’m sure many of you will start your spring cleaning soon.
Toccoa Falls College Trip
Several students have expressed interest in visiting Toccoa Falls College. Because of this we are organizing a college visit during the school’s campus preview weekend. We would leave on March 25th and return on the 28th. The cost is $50 per student. See pastor Dan for details.

Missing Anything?
A variety of clothing items have been left at the church and are hanging up on the coat rack in the hallway between the two buildings. Stop by and see what might you yours. Also, if you left any other items at the church, call the church office to see if we have found them: 301-384-6996.

Vision Statement
Copies of our church’s new vision statement were distributed October 18, 2009. The statement reads:
We will change our world
by helping people
know God, love life and serve others.
Knowing God is possible because of the incarnation of Jesus Christ and the reflection of his life in ours. Loving life is the result of being filled by the Spirit of God, nourished by the Word of God and encouraged by the people of God. Serving others is a calling that follows the example and creativity of Christ who made us to do good works. Changing our world is possible because of the change that Jesus can make in us as we submit our lives to him. Changing the world around us is a measured hope of making a difference in the community that God has called us to serve.

Birthday/Anniversary Calendars

Church Sign Update
After much discussion and prayer, the Leadership Team has decided not to pursue a banner name for the sign at this time. We will proceed, however, with the listing of each church that meets in the building and a tag line or web address. More information to come.

Save the Date!
We’ve moved the Women’s Retreat to spring. But this Retreat is worth waiting for – great content and great venue! Our theme is “Pass the Salt” - we’ll learn about being “salty” women who are change-agents in our world. We’ll be going to the Dunes Manor Hotel in Ocean City, MD on April 23-24, 2010 (Friday-Saturday). If you save only $5 per week from now until the March registration deadline, you’ll cover your $120 fee (retreat registration, 4-person room, Saturday breakfast and lunch). More details will be provided with registration package in January. For additional information or questions, contact Rita Schuh at 301-589-8377. |
